Rob Turner 1949-2019

Sunday, 24 November 2019 by Barrie Partridge

It is with profound sadness that we report Rob Turner has lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Sunday 24 November.

Rob had been a member of Sheffield BC for nearly 40 years, and had been Chief Tournament Director of this club for 10 years between 1993 and 2003.

Rob served for many years with the Yorkshire CBA, including setting up the county's first web site in 1999 and developing the current web site. In addition to Web Master duties, Rob was also YCBA Assistant Secretary for about seven years.

Rob was the first ever member of Sheffield BC to become an EBU TD and had become about the tenth-longest-serving member of the EBU TD Panel. He ran and directed at many National events over the last nearly 20 years, as well as many county and local events, especially the annual Charity Swiss Teams. Rob also trained many bridge club players in Yorkshire and many surrounding counties to become EBU Club TDs.

His contribution at all levels of the game has been huge and he will be greatly missed by many friends and colleagues across the bridge community and beyond.

Our sincere condolences to Mary, Rob's real-life (as well as bridge) partner for the last 40 or so years.

There will not be a funeral service. Rob decided to donate his body for scientific research to benefit others.

Rob's last ever bridge hand saw him declare and make 4SX to win a Waddington League match for his team.
