When downstairs at the Bridge Club, you may have noticed the glass-fronted bookcases at the end of the room. These contain the historic Sheffield Bridge Club Library and I am proud to be the latest Librarian, freshly appointed by the Committee.

If you want to borrow a book, just ask David behind the bar, and write the details down in the ancient (well, quite old) black ledger.

I intend to give this dusty corner of the club a bit of a shake-up. To start with I have started cataloguing all the books. I have got as far as the row of books written by Ely Culbertson and so I am taking a breather. I have taken out the duplicates, of which there are quite a lot, and will put a list up in the club, and on the website. If you want to take one of these books, I would only ask for a nominal fee of 50p, which I will put into a Library fund, and one day I might be able to add a new book to our collection. Please initial the book on the list to show your interest. I will leave the list up until the end of April. If more than one person is interested – perhaps unlikely – then we will have an exciting auction. For other books, the local charity shops will share the take.

I will then organise the books into Historic (pre 1939), Books on Play, and Books on Bidding (Old i.e. pre-1975) and New.

I would be very happy to receive any bridge books you may have at home and no longer need. Obviously the more modern works will have greater relevance to Club members. I could offer any such books for auction if you like, with half of any proceeds going to the Library Fund.
